Beware the hype: Uncover what really makes or breaks startup communities!
Cutting through the noise to craft authentic connections
As a founder, you've probably heard it a million times: "Build a community” or “You can replicate the product but you can’t replicate the community.”
It sounds like a straightforward solution to many startup challenges, but is it the right move for you? Over the past few years, as I've navigated the tumultuous waters of community building, I've picked up some crucial insights.
Let me share what I've learned along the way. I hope it's helpful.
Community Building: Not a Buzzword, but a Strategy
Many founders jump into community building expecting immediate results. They think it's all about gathering people and watching magic happen.
It's not that simple.
Back in 2017, I realized that the true power of a community lies not in its size but in its engagement and purpose. When I shifted my focus from numbers to impact, that's when the real growth started.
Here are some key lessons I've learned:
Understand Your Why: Why are you building this community? Is it to create brand loyalty, gather user feedback, or provide support? Clarity on your purpose is non-negotiable.
Define Your Who: Who is your community for? Identifying your target audience is crucial. You can't be everything to everyone, and that's okay.
Create Value Before Expecting It: Communities thrive on give and take. Focus on what value you can offer your members before thinking about what you can get from them.
Engagement Over Size: A small, engaged community is far more valuable than a large, passive one. Prioritize interactions and genuine connections.
Feedback is a Goldmine: Your community is a direct line to customer thoughts and needs. Use it to steer your product development and marketing strategies.
Create a Sense of Belonging: Building a community is about creating a space where members feel a sense of belonging and shared identity. This emotional connection is the glue that holds your community together.
Patience and Persistence: Communities don't grow overnight. It takes consistent effort and patience to see the fruits of your labour.
Iterate and Evolve: What works today might not work tomorrow. Be open to evolving your community strategies as you grow and learn.
Community Building: A Double-Edged Sword
It's important to acknowledge that community building is a double-edged sword. Done right, it can be a unique advantage for your startup. Done wrong, it can become a resource-draining endeavour with little to show for it.
One of the biggest challenges is balancing the line between creating genuine connections and achieving business objectives. It's easy to slip into using the community solely as a sales channel, which can backfire. The key is to maintain authenticity and align the community's purpose with your business goals without being overtly promotional.
So, Where Do You Go From Here?
If you're at this juncture, wondering how to navigate the complex world of community building, I’ve been there. And I've put together something that might be the roadmap you need.
For the last two years, I’ve been getting a lot of inbound questions from founders thinking about building a community or thinking they had built one. I had a bunch of conversations via email and Zoom and found that the most common question was “How do you create a community that contributes to your business?” Here’s an example:

So, I started jotting down the lessons, strategies, and insights I've gathered over the years. This is now culminating in a guide that I wish I had when I started: 'Community Building: The Founder's Playbook.'
This is not another how-to manual. It's a deep dive into the strategic and personal journey of community building.
This guide covers everything from setting the right foundations to scaling your community in alignment with your business goals. I’m going deep into specific questions and use cases directly applicable to early-stage to Series A startups to ensure it’s filled with relevant examples and insights.
And because I love solving these problems together with founders, I’ve added a personal 1:1 tier that will get you the guide + 30 minutes with me where we’ll get right to the problems you’re dealing with.
It's set to release at the end of January, and I can't wait to share it with you. If you're interested, keep an eye out for it.
Conclusion
Building a community can be one of the most rewarding experiences as a founder. It's not just about growth metrics but creating something meaningful and impactful.
I hope these insights help you on your journey. And if you ever feel lost in the maze of community building, remember, that the right strategy and mindset can turn challenges into opportunities.
